Church History
A church named Free Union was constituted in 1828 in the area of Louisa County called Mechanicsville. The congregation of Free Union shared a frame building on the Jefferson Highway with several denominations.
The church was voted into the Goshen Baptist Association in 1829, reporting a membership of 33 members. The congregation grew, and in 1850 they moved into the present brick sanctuary across the highway from the original church, with a total membership of 168. At this time the name was changed to Mechanicsville Baptist Church.
In 1856, a membership of 262 members was reported (114 white members and 148 African-American). In 1866, the African-American members began a church across the highway at the old site and called their fellowship Free Union.
For many years, Mechanicsville shared a pastor with other churches in the area and in 1954 a full-time pastor was called. A parsonage was built in 1955 and a educational building was erected adjoining the sanctuary be the end of 1956. Members of the church did a large part of the work. Over the years a vestibule, front porch, and a picnic pavilion were added. In 2009, a new education building and fellowship hall was dedicated. Many members and friends of Mechanicsville Baptist Church were dedicated to the completion of these projects.
